Yaz/Yasmin Injury Lawyers
Serving Colorado and Minnesota

Yaz and Yasmin are popular birth control pills manufactured by Bayer Healthcare. There have been a growing number of lawsuits filed against Bayer due to serious injuries associated with the consumption of these birth control pills. If you have a Yaz or Yasmin pharmaceutical injury claim, Gempeler Trial Lawyers can help you receive the compensation you deserve.

Due to aggressive marketing campaigns, Yaz and Yasmin sales increased dramatically in 2007 and 2008. In 2008, Yaz comprised 17.7% of all birth control sales, earning $616 million for Bayer, while Yasmin comprised 11% of all birth control sales for a total of $382 million. In recent years, Yaz and Yasmin sales have declined due to mounting evidence of serious side effects associated with these drugs.

Bayer’s marketing campaigns have been labeled “deceptive” and “misleading” by the FDA. Despite having knowledge of the serious risks associated with these drugs, Bayer Healthcare failed to adequately warn consumers of the potentially life-threatening consequences they face from taking Yaz and Yasmin.

Yaz/Yasmin Side Effects

Yaz and Yasmin contain a “fourth generation” progestin, called drospirenone, which is not present in any other birth control medication. Drospirenone has been found to increase potassium levels in the blood, causing a condition called hyperkalemia which can lead to serious heart issues, including:

  • Disruption of normal heart rhythms
  • Slowing of the blood flow through the heart, increasing the risk of blood clots

If blood clots occur in the heart, they can ultimately result in other serious conditions such as:

  • Heart attack
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Stroke

Other serious side effects associated with Yaz and Yasmin include:

  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Death

Between 2004 and 2008, the FDA received more than 50 reports of deaths associated with the use of Yaz and Yasmin. Many of these women were found to have elevated potassium levels, and it is likely that this was a contributing factor to their deaths.
