DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Systems received FDA approval in 2005 to replace damaged hip sockets. The implants are composed of a metal-on-metal bearings system. Shortly after releasing the ASR Hip Replacement System, DePuy Orthopedics began receiving numerous reports of complications with these medical devices which have led to early failure of the implants.

DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Problems

During normal usage, the DePuy ASR hip implants have been found to produce debris made up of small metal particles which may cause inflammation and tissue damage. As a result, patients have been experiencing:

  • Hip pain
  • Loosening of the DePuy ASR hip implant
  • Hip failure
  • Difficulty walking
  • Bone fractures near the implant
  • Need for hip replacement revision surgery

Reports of complications with the DePuy ASR hip implants have steadily increased since 2006. In 2007, the FDA received over 100 reports of adverse incidents. That total rose to over 200 reports in 2008 and over 300 in 2009. In most of these cases, patients were forced to undergo surgery to replace the defective hip implant.

DePuy ASR Hip Implant Recall

In August 2010, DePuy Orthopedics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, recalled 93,000 DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Systems. The medical device manufacturer finally agreed to the recall after a study by the National Joint Registry of England and Wales demonstrated a 12% failure rate associated with the ASR Hip Resurfacing System and a 13% failure rate associated with the ASR XL Acetabular System.

Based on these statistics, it is estimated that approximately one in eight DePuy hip replacement systems will result in failure. Patients experiencing hip implant failure required revision surgery within five years of the initial surgery.

If you received a DePuy ASR hip implant, you should contact your surgeon to schedule an examination, even if no complications have been experienced to date.

DePuy Hip Implant Lawsuits

Since the August 2010 recall, numerous defective product lawsuits have been filed against DePuy Orthopedics seeking compensation for injuries associated with the use of a defective ASR Hip Replacement System. Many of these lawsuits allege that DePuy Orthopedics did not properly test and research these metal-on-metal hip replacement devices before releasing them for use in surgery. As a result, thousands of patients received defective hip implants and have been exposed to an increased risk of unnecessary complications.

If you have suffered hip replacement complications from the use of a defective DePuy ASR hip implant, you may be entitled to receive compensation for your damages.
