The FDA released a statement on December 17, 2004 halting a clinical trial of Celebrex, a Cox-2 inhibitor. The trial was stopped because of “an increased risk of cardiovascular events in patients taking Celebrex.
Vioxx, a Cox-2 inhibitor by Merck, was voluntarily withdrawn from the market in September 2004 for an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and bleeds.
Patients in the Celebrex trial taking 400mg. twice daily had a 3.4 times greater risk of cardiovascular events compared to placebo.
