Bextra is a Cox-2 inhibitor pain medication, similar to Vioxx and Celebrex, that has been shown to cause an increased risk of cardiovascular events. It has also been linked to strokes, heart attacks, blood clots and Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Pfizer, the manufacturer of Bextra, has only issued a warning for Bextra patients who are undergoing heart bypass surgery.
Stevens Johnson syndrome is a rare and life threatening skin disorder. In this syndrome, a person has blistering of mucous membranes, typically in the mouth, eyes, and vagina and patchy areas of rash. The affected areas are painful and the person feels very chilled and fever. In some, the hair and nails fall out. It can be fatal.
