Problems with Avandia

Avandia was initially approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1999 for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. It was intended to serve as a safer alternative to other diabetes drugs on the market at the time. However, over the past decade, the drug has been linked to several serious health risks, including:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Liver injury
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Increased incidence of bone fractures

FDA Action against Avandia

In May 2007, the FDA warned consumers that Avandia had been associated with an increased risk of heart attack and heart related deaths. This risk was supported by a study released several weeks later in the New England Journal of Medicine which demonstrated a 43% higher risk of heart attack in patients taking Avandia.

On November 14, 2007, the FDA issued a “Black Box Warning” for Avandia in association with its increased risk of potentially fatal heart problems. This is the strongest possible warning issued by the FDA, and it is reserved for drugs which carry a risk of life threatening side effects. In September 2010, the FDA further restricted the use of Avandia based on mounting evidence that the drug posed a serious danger to individuals taking it.

Other countries have taken action against Avandia as well. The drug was banned by the European Medicines Agency and in April 2011, Avandia will be recalled in New Zealand.

Avandia Lawsuits

GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Avandia, is currently embroiled in a series of pharmaceutical injury lawsuits regarding the diabetes drug. In July 2010, the company set aside $460 million to settle approximately 10,000 of these claims. However, many more Avandia lawsuits are currently pending.
